National Challenge

What currently constrains the sector

A significant proportion of perishable production is lost between harvest and market, and losses fall hardest on smallholder producers who have least capacity to absorb them. Production depends heavily on rainfall timing, so variability translates directly into income and price volatility.

NBP Strategy

Agriculture: the approach

Address the value chain where the loss occurs rather than raising production volumes alone. Storage and cold chain generally recover more output per unit invested than yield programmes, and irrigation is prioritised by catchment according to water availability and crop value.

Priority Programs

Program pillars across agriculture

Each pillar is a programme area, not a committed project. Individual initiatives appear in the national pipeline with their own readiness and data-confidence levels.

Improved Inputs

Seed, fertiliser and crop protection access at the point of production.

Mechanization

Shared equipment services that raise labour productivity without requiring individual ownership.

Irrigation

Water delivery where resources and crop value support the investment.

Precision Agriculture

Data-led input timing and application, reducing waste and raising yield consistency.

Farmer Services

Advisory, aggregation and finance access for smallholder producers.

Storage

Dry storage at aggregation points, the lowest-cost intervention against post-harvest loss.

Cold Chain

Temperature-controlled storage and transport for perishable production.

Processing

Transformation near the catchment, retaining value in the producing region.

Market Access

Distribution and offtake arrangements connecting producers to urban and regional demand.

Export Development

Quality, certification and logistics capability for regional and international markets.

Agricultural Finance

Working capital and asset finance appropriate to seasonal cash flow.

Research

Varietal and agronomic research matched to local conditions.

Investment

Opportunities in this sector, with readiness and capital requirement stated per initiative.
