Sector Strategy
Clean energy and power infrastructure for Africa’s next economy
Reliable, affordable and diversified electricity for households, industry and essential services.

National Challenge
What currently constrains the sector
Electricity reliability constrains industrial productivity and raises the operating cost of hospitals, schools and digital infrastructure. Where supply is interrupted, enterprises install private generation, which costs more per unit and increases emissions. Grid capability, rather than generation cost, is now typically the binding constraint.

NBP Strategy
Energy: the approach
Assess generation, storage and network investment together, since adding capacity the network cannot accept delivers no reliability benefit. Technology selection follows technical, environmental and financial feasibility — not preference — and mini-grids are assessed wherever extending the main network would cost more than serving demand locally.

Priority Programs
Programs leading this sector
Each is a programme area under preparation. Neither carries a confirmed cost, secured funding nor an approval.

Hydro-Solar Hybridization
Photovoltaic generation sited beside existing hydro reservoirs, using transmission corridors that are already built and stabilising daytime supply against evening drawdown.

Smart Grid Backbone
High-voltage transmission with active load balancing, so that generation added anywhere on the network can reach the load centres that need it.
Priority Programs
Program pillars across energy
Each pillar is a programme area, not a committed project. Individual initiatives appear in the national pipeline with their own readiness and data-confidence levels.
Hydropower Optimization
Raising output and availability from existing and planned hydro assets.
Utility-Scale Solar
Generation sited for irradiance, land availability and grid acceptance capacity.
Distributed Solar
Rooftop and behind-the-meter generation close to the demand it serves.
Battery Storage
Dispatchable capacity so added solar improves evening reliability rather than shifting the peak.
Transmission Modernization
Reinforcement that allows new generation to reach load centres.
Distribution Modernization
Reducing technical and commercial losses across the distribution network.
Mini-Grids
Local systems for communities the main network will not reach economically.
Industrial Power Systems
Dedicated supply arrangements for industrial zones and large processing loads.
Energy Efficiency
Demand-side measures that defer generation investment at lower cost per unit.
